Jill Biden made an unexpected visit to Ukraine and meets with the first lady

Jill Biden spent three hours in Ukraine on Mother’s Day, going from the Slovakian border to a village 10 minutes away to visit the first lady Olena Zelenska.

Ukraine’s Uzhhorod Jill Biden paid an unexpected visit to western Ukraine on Mother’s Day, having a surprise meeting with first lady Olena Zelenska to express US support for the country as Russia pursues its brutal conflict in the east.

She was the latest high-profile American to enter Ukraine during the conflict, and it was Zelenska’s first public appearance since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24.

Jill Biden, the first lady, paid a surprise visit to Ukraine on Sunday, where she met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s wife, Olena Zelenska, to express support for the country while its battle with Russia continues.

According to the Associated Press, Biden, 70, told Zelenska, “I wanted to come on Mother’s Day.” “I believed it was critical to demonstrate to the Ukrainian people that this conflict must end, that it has been horrible, and that the people of the United States stand with the people of Ukraine.”

According to CNN, the two first ladies met in Uzhhorod, a tiny city in western Ukraine near the Slovakian border, at a school that is presently sheltering war victims.

Biden said the two ladies intended to discuss “the support that the United States has for the people of Slovakia and Ukraine, and how we stand together in aiding the Ukrainian people” before the closed-doors discussion over tea at Grassalkovich Palace.

According to the United Nations, Slovakia has taken in roughly 400,000 of the 5.7 million Ukrainians who have fled their nation during its war with Russia.

Biden took a piece of White House stationery from her purse and typed a message into a guest book before her meeting with Caputova.

The first lady of the United States informed Zelenska, “I wanted to come on Mother’s Day.” “I believed it was critical to demonstrate to the Ukrainian people that this conflict must end, that it has been horrible, and that the people of the United States stand with the people of Ukraine.”

Biden traveled to Uzhhorod, Ukraine, for nearly two hours, just a 10-minute drive from a Slovakian border settlement where she had inspected a border processing center.

When President Joe Biden visited Poland in March, he expressed disappointment that he was not permitted to cross the border into Ukraine to witness circumstances “firsthand,” citing security concerns. The White House recently stated that while the president “would love to come,” there are currently no plans for him to do so.

According to Michael LaRosa, the first lady’s spokeswoman, the meeting came about because Jill Biden showed interest in visiting the region, particularly the school where she and Zalenska met, and decided to spend Mother’s Day with Ukrainian mothers.
